In keeping with the above-detailed distinction of all the weather and phenomena of masochism and sadism, and as a résumé of all observed cases, lust in the infliction of pain and lust in inflicted ache seem but as two totally different sides of the same psychical course of, of which the primary and essential factor is the consciousness of active or passive subjection, by which the mix of cruelty and lustful pleasure has only a secondary psychological significance. That is proven by the numerous cases of masochism-actually, the majority-through which flagellation never seems; through which the perverse impulse is directed completely to purely symbolic acts expressing subjection with none precise infliction of pain. These are: the fact (1) that in sexual emotion, to a sure extent, as an accompanying psychical excitation, an impulse might arise to affect the item of need in every potential way and with the best doable depth, which, in people sexually hyperæsthetic, could grow to be an impulse to inflict pain; and the actual fact (2) that, underneath pathological conditions, the man’s lively rôle of winning lady might grow to be a limiteless need for subjugation. This pathological fetichism is related, via gradual transitions, with physiological fetichism; so that (at the least in physique-fetichism) it is almost unattainable to sharply define the beginning of the perversion. Moreover, the entire discipline of physique-fetichism does not likely prolong beyond the bounds of things which normally stimulate the sexual instinct. This choice for certain explicit bodily traits in persons of the opposite intercourse,-by the facet of which, likewise, a marked choice for certain psychical characteristics may be demonstrated,-following Binet (“du Fetischisme dans l’amour,” Revue philosophique, 1887) and Lombroso (Introduction to the Italian version of the second edition of this work), I have known as “fetichism”; as a result of this enthusiasm for sure portions of the physique (or even articles of attire) and the worship of them, in obedience to sexual impulses, ceaselessly call to mind the reverence for relics, holy objects, and many others., in religious cults.
By the side of this physiological fetichism, however, there is, within the psycho-sexual sphere, an undoubted pathological, erotic fetichism, of which there’s already a quite a few collection of cases presenting phenomena having nice clinical and psychiatric curiosity, and, underneath certain circumstances, forensic significance. Since such instances are numerous, in such acts (and in flagellation in masochists, having like significance) we should search to ascertain in what relation pain and lust stand to one another. The relation will not be of such a nature that that which causes bodily ache is here simply perceived as bodily pleasure; however the person in a state of masochistic ecstasy feels no ache; either as a result of, by purpose of his emotional state (like that of the soldier in battle), the physical effect on his cutaneous nerves is just not apperceived; or because (as with religious martyrs and fanatics), with the preoccupation of consciousness with lustful emotion, the thought of maltreatment stays merely an emblem, with out its high quality of pain. Within the self-torture of religious fanatics (fakirs, howling dervishes, religious flagellants) there is an analogous state, only with a distinction in the standard of pleasurable feeling.
To a sure extent there may be over-compensation of physical pain in psychical pleasure; and only the excess stays in consciousness as psychical lust. While in the former there’s a need to suffer and be subjected to violence, within the latter the wish is to inflict ache and use violence. All of the acts and situations utilized by the sadist in the active rôle turn into the object of the desire of the mosochist within the passive rôle. For masochism, as shown above, these elements lie in the fact (1) that in the state of sexual emotion every impression produced by the consort, independently of the way of its production, is, per se, attended with lustful pleasure, which, where there’s hyperæsthesia sexualis, may go as far as to over-compensate all painful sensation; and in the fact (2) that “sexual bondage,” dependent on mental elements which are in themselves not perverse, could, underneath pathological circumstances, turn out to be a perverse, pleasurable want for subjection to the other sex, which-even if or not it’s fairly pointless to assume its inheritance from the feminine aspect-represents a pathological degeneration of the character belonging to girl,-of the instinct of subordination, physiological in girl. I repeat that the decisive factors, within the differentiation of simple passive flagellation from flagellation dependent upon masochistic desire, are that, in the former, the act is a way to make coitus, or at the very least ejaculation, attainable; and that, in the latter, it is a technique of gratification of masochistic desires.
