This choice for certain specific bodily characteristics in persons of the alternative sex,-by the side of which, likewise, a marked desire for sure psychical characteristics may be demonstrated,-following Binet (“du Fetischisme dans l’amour,” Revue philosophique, 1887) and Lombroso (Introduction to the Italian edition of the second edition of this work), I have called “fetichism”; because this enthusiasm for certain portions of the physique (or even articles of attire) and the worship of them, in obedience to sexual impulses, regularly name to mind the reverence for relics, holy objects, and so forth., in religious cults. 3. By the aspect of this physiological fetichism, however, there may be, within the psycho-sexual sphere, an undoubted pathological, erotic fetichism, of which there is already a quite a few collection of circumstances presenting phenomena having nice clinical and psychiatric interest, and, under certain circumstances, forensic importance. Acts of cruelty serve to express this subjection; first, as a result of they are the most extreme means for the expression of this relation; and, again, as a result of they characterize essentially the most intense impact that one person, both with or without coitus, can exert on another. These traits are usually not predictors or indicators of sexual abuse, but relatively points of a child’s life that can make them more susceptible. In the active maltreatment forming the article of the sadist’s sexual want there is, in truth, no irritation of his own sensory nerves by the act of maltreatment; in order that there could be little doubt of the purely psychical character of the origin of this perversion.
In each perversions these acts advance from purely symbolic acts to extreme maltreatment. At any rate, one of the two perversions is all the time markedly predominant. For masochism, as shown above, these parts lie in the very fact (1) that in the state of sexual emotion each impression produced by the consort, independently of the way of its production, is, per se, attended with lustful pleasure, which, where there is hyperæsthesia sexualis, might go so far as to over-compensate all painful sensation; and in the fact (2) that “sexual bondage,” dependent on mental elements which can be in themselves not perverse, may, underneath pathological conditions, become a perverse, pleasurable need for subjection to the alternative intercourse, which-even when it be fairly pointless to assume its inheritance from the female side-represents a pathological degeneration of the character belonging to woman,-of the instinct of subordination, physiological in woman.
